In Taiwan's recent presidential elections Ma Ying-jeou, the preferred candidate of the U.S. and China, was re-elected. This is being interpreted as an endorsement of his efforts to strengthen ties with China. In China, the news coverage of the election was prevalent and surprisingly even-handed. Does this signal an easing of tension in one of the world's diplomatic hotspots? What does this mean for the future of Taiwan, and Taiwanese democracy?
