Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence

Events | Headline and Cultural Forums

Christian Parenti’s new book, Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence, explores how, from Africa to Asia and Latin America, climate change is expressing itself through heightened outbursts of violence, humanitarian crisis, social breakdown and spreading state failure. From his travels (in Northwest Kenya, Afghanistan, India and Pakistan, in Brazil and Mexico) Parenti reveals how parts of the Global South are moving towards state failure while economies of the North are moving towards a form of militarized adaptation to climate change built upon counterinsurgency, repression and segregation. Will these forces collide? Are we headed for political, economic, and environmental catastrophe?
