The Emerging Giant

Arvind Panagariya

Author, India: The Emerging Giant
Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy at Columbia University

Programs on World Affairs

India is not only the world's largest democracy at 1.1 billion people; it is also a rising economic giant. Why is it that India is now emerging as an economic giant after not realizing its earlier promise? What policy initiatives undertaken in the last twenty years have contributed to this upward growth? What does this dramatic growth mean for us?

In his new book, India: The Emerging Giant, Arvind Panagariya offers a brilliant analysis of India's economy over the last fifty years - from the promising start in the 50's to the near debacle in the 70's to the phenomenal growth of today. India's astonishing economic surge is one of the most momentous events of our time. Arvind Panagariya provides us a detailed, comprehensive and superbly clear survey of this breakthrough, how it came about, and where it might lead.

Arvind Panargariya is the Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy and Professor of Economics at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. A leading authority on the economy of India, he has been the chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank and has also work with the world Bank, IMF, WTO, and UNCTAD. He holds a PhD in Economics from Princeton. According to Fareed Zakaria (Editor of Newsweek International) Prof Panagariya has written "the definitive book on the Indian economy," in which he "puts to rest myths and settles debates with balance and fairness."
