The Delight of Turkish Cuisine, Culture and Community

Turkey is a fascinating part of the world, known as a “bridge between East and West”. Modern Turkey with all its richness and complexities, as well as Turkey’s centuries old history and cultural traditions, are often unknown to Americans. A generous grant from The Turkish Cultural Center in Washington DC has enabled the World Affairs Council to bring Turkish culture to Oregon teachers, students and the community. It supported the Portrait of Turkey at last April’s Teach the Middle East Conference for K–12 Educators and enabled six Oregon teachers to participate in a Teachers Study Tour of Turkey this past summer. Now Portrait of Turkey comes to the community in a three part series.

In recognition of the 86th Anniversary of the Republic of Turkey and the opening of the new Center for Turkish Studies at Portland State University, the World Affairs Council is offering an evening that will immerse you in the country of Turkey right here in Portland. Highlights will include a traditional Turkish meal, Turkish folk dance and music, the enactment of a Turkish folktale by Mythobolous Mask Theater and an opportunity to view and purchase Turkish Art and Artifacts from Ottoman Klasik, a Turkish Coffee and Fine Import Store in Portland. As added attractions, the teachers who participated in the 2009 Teachers Study Tour of Turkey will share their reflections and you will have a chance to meet Turkish PSU students, faculty and members of the Turkish/American community in Portland.
