Great Decisions Books
The annual Great Decisions Briefing Books provide excellent background and thought-provoking analyses on the eight different foreign policy issues selected by the Foreign Policy Association. Each year, the FPA’s Editorial Advisory Committee selects the most critical topics facing the United States and engages experts to write an overview of that area. The Briefing Books also include a wide range of discussion questions, options for future policy, and further reading materials and resources are listed at the end of each chapter to help facilitate Discussion Group conversation. In addition resources are listed at the end of each chapter to help facilitate Discussion Group conversation.
The 2017 books will be available in early January at the Portland State University Friday lectures or at World Affairs Council of Oregon offices. NOTE: we will no longer be shipping Great Decisions books to discussion group/group leaders, to order your books outside of the Portland metro area, please contact the Foreign Policy Association: fpa.org
Great Decisions Television Series (available in an 8-episode DVD set) devotes one half-hour episode to each of the eight Great Decisions topics, exploring them in detail with experts in the field. Many Discussion Groups find these useful for animating conversation.
The Great Decisions Teacher's Guide is intended as an educator’s supplement to the Great Decisions briefing book. Exercises are designed to encourage students to explore multiple policy options, ethical questions, the personal aspects of political events and the connections linking American society with the larger world. Each topic contains two lessons which include student objectives, key terms, reproducible handouts and a glossary. The Teacher's Guide is designed for use in the classroom (grades 6-12) or in Discussion Groups.
