Join us for a rich discussion with Mel Gurtov (Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Portland State University), drawn from his newly published book that offers a comprehensive analysis of the domestic politics and international consequences of Trump's foreign policy. With detailed case studies of policy toward key countries and regions, including China, Russia, North Korea, Europe, and the Middle East, Gurtov makes a vigorous argument, centered on human-interest priorities and values, for rejecting a foreign policy of America First when it comes to the major issues of our times: climate change, China's rise, war and conflict, human rights, authoritarian leadership, and nuclear weapons. Gurtov asks if a successor to this administration might be able to reverse course and restore foreign policy to exemplifying America's commitment to humane and democratic governance and cooperative economic relations with allies and economic partners.
Mel Gurtov is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Portland State University. His most recent books are Engaging Adversaries: Peacemaking and Diplomacy in the Human Interest (Roman & Littlefield, 2018) and America in Retreat: Foreign Policy Under Donald Trump (Roman & Littlefield, forthcoming in 2020). He blogs at https://melgurtov.com.
