Developing Youth Leadership in Brazil

Events | International Visitors

Learn how four remarkable young Brazilians are using innovative approaches to harness the talent and energy of disadvantaged youth and build community leaders. These Brazilian social entrepreneurs will be visiting Portland under the auspices of the US Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program. During their stay in Portland, they will be meeting with an array of youth serving organizations to share approaches and strategies.

This brown bag luncheon is a chance to learn from and share with those working directly with disenfranchised youth to address challenges plaguing their communities. Each of the four visitors brings an interesting perspective to the issues. Raquel Da Silva Barros was named an Ashoka Fellow for her pioneering work with young women suffering from drug addiction. Larissa Sonoda Dantas mobilizes youth to provide adequate housing for destitute communities. Sergio Luiz Lopez De Souza directs an organization that uses culture to engage youth in positive behavior while addressing issues of human rights and justice. And, Pedro Jose Mendes Filho is the Special Secretary for Youth and Employment for the State of Pernambuco. After a brief introduction to their individual organizations, there will be a facilitated discussion. (Portuguese-English translators will be on hand).
