The Japanese horticultural art known as Bonsai has come a long way from its origins in the imperial courts of ancient China in the 1200s before migrating to Japan in the 18th century. How has this ancient art adapted and changed over time and how did Bonsai find its way to our western shores? American bonsai expert Ryan Neil (who studied with world renowned master Mr. Masahiko Kimura in Japan) discusses the rise of bonsai as a western form of artistic expression, how Portland and the entire Pacific Northwest have become a breeding ground for bonsai’s artistic exploration and evolution, and bonsai as a broader tool for engaging sustainability.
