Building Schools, Giving Hope: Afghanistan’s Green Village Schools

Events | Headline and Cultural Forums

Dr. Mohammad Khan Kharoti, a Portland resident and founder of the nonprofit Green Village Schools, has worked tirelessly over the last decade and a half to establish schools in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province where he grew up, because, as the retired doctor says, “The biggest enemy of Afghanistan is illiteracy.” But what are the challenges of maintaining stable and safe schools in rural Afghanistan and how did Kharoti and his team facilitate transparent, collaborative relationships between elders, parents and state and tribal governments?  Follow Kharoti’s journey from 2001 when he first received permission from the Taliban to 2008, when the school was destroyed by militants to 2015,  when an Afghan Appeal-financed construction and Taliban-approved new school was built on the old site and is now serving 550 girls and 1150 boys.
