Escape from Camp 14
Events | Headline and Cultural Forums
Journalist Blaine Harden discusses the grim realities of North Korean political prisons, as seen through the lens of Shin Dong-hyuk, one of the few people known to have escaped and found their way to freedom in South Korea. Harden tells the story of Shin, who was born in prison and until he was 22 had a limited view of civilized existence – a harrowing life where his mother was just another competitor for food, he suffered severe torture and witnessed the execution of his own family. Shin’s life and subsequent escape helps tell the story of human rights abuses and suffering and also illuminates the powerful will to survive.
