Join the Council for a special matinee production of Milagro Theatre’s Lazarillo, an original bilingual work created and directed by Carlos Alexis Cruz. This is a wonderful opportunity for Council members to explore the vibrancy of Latino theatre and Spanish and Latin American arts and culture that Milagro has been presenting to Portland audiences for more than 25 years.

Based on a 16th century picaresque novel banned by the Inquisition, this modern interpretation integrates hip-hop, circus and comedia dell’arte traditions to create a vibrant afternoon of physical theater suitable for the whole family. Sold to a blind beggar as a child and then passed from one master to another — each more cruel and incompetent than the last — young Lazarillo must pilfer and deceive to survive, and is usually punished for his pains. But like his successors Pinocchio or Huck Finn, the endearing Lazarillo learns to fake miracles and mouse infestations and to expose hucksters and the absurdities of the establishment, all in an attempt to elevate his position in society.

Director Carlos Alexis Cruz will offer a post-show talk-back with Council members.
