Life and Markets in Ongoing Conflict: Wafa Ulliyan on Gaza
Events | Headline and Cultural Forums

The Gaza conflict has raged in the Middle East for decades. After the most recent violent outbreaks in 2014, Mercy Corps shifted its focus in Gaza from economic development to recovery. Now, they've taken an integrated approach to help families recover from emergencies and ultimately achieve economic security, especially by empowering young people to use software and Internet technologies to connect with the global market.
For this informal talk, Mercy Corps Deputy Mission Director in Gaza, Wafa Ulliyan, shares personal stories of her life in Gaza, including the crisis of 2008-2009 when she had to flee the port of Gaza City to escape shelling and increased danger. Ullilyan also provides a glimpse into how Gazans carry on through conflict with a look at how conflict affects market development before, during and after conflicts and crises.
Wafa Ulliyan joined Mercy Corps in 2006 as an Administrative Officer. Since 2010, Ulliyan has worked in the Mercy Corps Gaza office as the Operations Director. She received her MBA from Islamic University in 2014.
