#WithRefugees: A Commemoration of United Nations Day

Events | Headline and Cultural Forums

The worst global refugee crisis since World War II.  What does that mean?  Does Portland harbor a moral responsibility to refugees?  Join us for this commemoration of United Nations Day - and enjoy this uniquely immersive, audience-engaged program, which includes Living on a Dollar a Day, a gallery exhibit from Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Renee Byer; a virtual reality experience that allows viewers to the see the world through the eyes of a teenage Syrian girl living in a UN refugee camp; and a program of speakers, ranging from a MTV and Huffington Post contributor to an expert from the UN refugee agency; and closing with an audience-engaged discussion sponsored by Oregon Humanities' Conversation Project.
Speakers include:

  • Yashar Vasef, President, United Nations Association of Portland, opens up the program with a welcome and a brief talk on his experience as a child in Tehran in the midst of the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s;
  • Grace Wong, national adviser for the UN Foundation's Girl Up campaign, contributor to Huffington Post and MTV on issues of girls rights;
  • Jana Mason, Senior Advisor, U.S. Government and External Relations with the UN refugee agency (UNHCR);
  • The program concludes with Manuel Padilla, of Oregon Humanities Conversation Project who'll facilitate a conversation on The Space Between Us:  Immigrants, Refugees and Oregon.

An informal reception will start at 1 pm where people can check out the Living on a Dollar a Day and the virtual reality documentary about a teenage Syrian refugee girl at a UN refugee camp in Jordan.  Light snacks will be available.  The presentation feature of the program begins at 1:30pm.
