World Affairs Council of Oregon Selected as City Hub for Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative

News | International Visitors

This fall the World Affairs Council is pleased to host the U.S. Department of State’s Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative Professional Fellows Program (YLAI).  14 young entrepreneurs from Latin America and the Caribbean will visit Portland from October 8 to November 7 for professional fellowships with local businesses and nonprofits.  These YLAI Professional Fellows will also receive training and networking opportunities with the Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber and other community partners to expand their leadership, entrepreneurial and management skills and accelerate their commercial and social ventures’ success.

Portland’s cohort is expected to include representatives from Argentina, Aruba, Bahamas, Bolivia, Colombia, Curacao, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, and Saint Lucia.  The World Affairs Council is seeking four-week fellowship sites for these visitors, as well host families for a weekend homestay October 14-16.  YLAI Fellows are English speaking, have at least 2 years of experience as entrepreneurs, and are 21-35 years old.

First launched in 2015, YLAI is an important step in fulfilling the Obama Administration’s commitment to cultivating entrepreneurship globally to foster social and economic development.  YLAI is nationally administered by the Meridian International Center with the support of the World Affairs Council of Oregon and 20 other local host organizations across the country.

Host a YLAI Fellow at Your Business or Nonprofit: October 10-November 4

The World Affairs Council is seeking Portland-area businesses and nonprofit organizations to serve as fellowship sites for the duration of the four-week fellowship from October 10 to November 4.  Fellowship hosts serve as role-models, teachers, and sounding boards for these emerging entrepreneurs and can include YLAI fellows in regular staff meetings, projects and proposals, discussions on fundraising and development, public events, networking opportunities, client meetings—whatever it is appropriate for your organization.  In addition to gaining from the skills and unique perspectives of a young Latin American professional, outstanding fellowship host will also be eligible for a reciprocal exchange to Latin America in spring of 2017.

Fellowships sites are currently needed in the fields of food processing and retail (cacao, coffee, fruit, and snack food), water supply, foreign language training, footware, entrepreneurship training, business administration, online media, and sharing economy applications and web-platforms.
