Ted Wheeler

State Treasurer, Oregon
 Ted Wheeler

Ted Wheeler is Oregon’s 28th State Treasurer. A sixth-generation Oregonian, he cares deeply about the state’s financial health. He is committed to protecting the state’s current strong credit ratings, to ensuring that public investments remain both prudent and profitable, and to conservatively managing Oregon’s debt.

A former manager and director at a local investment firm and chairman and chief executive officer of Multnomah County, Wheeler was appointed as treasurer in March 2010, elected in November 2010 and reelected in 2012.

He has directed efforts to help make the State Treasury a more efficient operation, a more responsible investor and more relevant to Oregonians. He increased transparency of Treasury data, pushed for money-saving technology changes, authorized securities fraud lawsuits against firms that misled investors, and announced a revamped college savings plan with lower costs and more options for families.

Also as treasurer, he has maintained his commitment to protecting the most vulnerable citizens in Oregon’s communities. He convened business leaders and spearheaded a new statewide blueprint dubbed the Oregon Investment Act.

Wheeler was born August 31, 1962, in Portland and graduated from Lincoln High School. He earned a B.A. degree in Economics from Stanford University, an M.B.A. degree from Columbia University and a Masters degree in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. His family has deep Oregon roots. The town of Wheeler, located on Nehalem Bay on the Oregon Coast, is named after his great-grandfather.

Wheeler is a longtime volunteer and has devoted energy to diverse causes including the Oregon Alcohol and Drug Policy Commission, Portland Mountain Rescue and Goose Hollow Family Shelter. He is an Eagle Scout.

As chairman of Multnomah County from 2007 to 2010, Wheeler oversaw a workforce of more than 4,400 and was responsible for reducing and balancing the budget and cutting the county’s debt.

When he isn’t working, Wheeler enjoys endurance sports. He lives in Southwest Portland with his wife Katrina and their daughter.
