COVID-19 jumped from wildlife to humans in a zoonotic spillover event that has brought the world to a standstill. Epidemiologists are tracking at least 700 more viruses with the same potential. This panel explores how the commercial trade in wildlife, the loss of habitat, and the increasing interaction between humans and wildlife are creating the perfect conditions for the next pandemic—and what we can do to stop it before it starts. Featured speakers include:
- Tom Gillespie (Atlanta, Emory University where he runs the Gillespie lab, exploring the ecology and emergence of pathogens of people, wildlife, and domestic animals)
- Jim Desmond (Liberia, of EcoHealth Alliance; a field veterinarian conducting disease surveillance in wildlife populations)
- George Omondi Paul (St. Paul, University of Minnesota, Veterinary Medicine School)
