Civil Rights: Past, Present, and Future

2019 Travel Opportunities:

June 2 - 9, 2019

(Jackson, Little Rock, Memphis, Birmingham, Selma, and Montgomery)

Join fellow WorldOregon members on a program that travels through the South meeting with voices trying to challenge racial and economic injustice. As we travel through Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Alabama meet with those who were part of the struggle including sharecroppers and Civil Rights-era foot soldiers as well as those involved in the struggle today. Meetings with activists like Elizabeth Eckford and Carolyn McKinstry focus on the courage of those who defied the odds to not only survive but live with dignity.

Together we will learn about the work of younger leaders like Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy, at the Equal Justice Initiative whose mission is to protect basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in America. Meet with Antar Lumumba, an American attorney, activist, politician and the current Mayor of Jackson, the country’s second youngest mayor. This trip is an extension of our Future Leaders, Global Voices theme for 2019.

Framed within this narrative are the histories of the music and cuisine of the South. From blues to jazz to soul food, some of the most powerful and inspired creations of both southern sound and southern cuisine were born out of hardship and poverty and today continue to evolve in exciting ways as new populations, ingredients, and instruments influence regional culture.
